Eastern Cape drought

Guest : Kaylynn Palm| EWN Reporter Drought conditions are causing headaches for schools situated in Makhanda as they experience daily shortages. The Eastern Cape was declared a drought disaster area last month. Some schools in parts of the town are affected by the ongoing drought which are causing sanitation problems. At Archie Mbolekwa Primary School, after 10am almost every day, the taps run dry. The toilets stop flushing, so learners can't use them and they are forced to use the bushes instead. A nearby school, Ntiska Secondary, faced closure not so long ago but principal Madeleine Schoeman was determined not to let it come to that. Schoeman's school was lucky though in that it got a Gift of the Givers' borehole on the premises.

Guest : Johann Roux Are medical malpractice claims were skyrocketing in SA? It's emerged that at least eight children have died allegedly at the hands of two Johannesburg doctors at Netcare Park Lane Clinic due to negligence, EWN reported earlier today. A warrant of arrest has been issued for pediatric surgeon Dr Peter Baele and anaesthetist Dr Abdulhay Munshi after 10-year-old Zayyaan Sayed died following a routine surgery. The pair are facing culpable homicide charges after Sayed’s lung collapsed and he died in intensive care unit in October. It's understood a total of 21 families have also come forward to sue Baele and Mushni for negligence. The two doctors will have to appear before a court on charges of culpable homicide once they have been arrested.

Earlier today, Ramaphosa, was locked in a meeting with Eskom’s management at its headquarters at Megawatt Park to find a solution to the crisis. Meanwhile, load-shedding has been downgraded to stage two on Tuesday.

International Child Support Awareness Day 2019

Both parents have a duty to support their children, but this doesn't always happen. In South Africa over 52% of children grow up without financial support from both parents. Today is International Child Support Awareness Day – a day started by Felicity Guest, founder of the Child Maintenance Difficulties in South Africa (CMDSA) is a Facebook page – to highlight the important role financial support plays in helping a child grown and thrive. This year, she launched National Child Support Awareness Week (a first in South Africa) which runs from 4 to 10 December, before culminating in International Child Support Awareness Day today.
